Breaking Ground: A Newsletter from CIHA. Promoting Independence Through Housing.

Investing in the Future

For me, one of the most satisfying things about the work we do at Cook Inlet Housing is knowing that we're laying a solid foundation for future generations of Alaskan's to build upon and thrive.

When we construct a new building -- whether it's one single-family home in Mountain View or 80 town-homes at Creekside Town Center in East Anchorage -- we build knowing that the structure and its surroundings are not transient; what we build today will be a part of the landscape of our community for many years. We have a responsibility to build something that enhances that landscape, that will withstand the elements and active use by its inhabitants (provided adequate maintenance) and will additionally challenge people's perceptions of affordable housing. This is an investment in the future that we take very seriously.

Developing high quality, attractive housing is tangible, but the investments we make in people are equally, if not more real and important. We invest in the families we serve through various housing programs that build pride and encourage self-reliance. We invest in our staff in many ways as well, most notably through our commitment to training and continuing education. These investments offer a better quality of life for families today and set an example for the children of these families. Stable housing, a commitment to hard work and education lays a solid foundation for today's children -- tomorrow's leaders.

In this edition of "Breaking Ground" you'll read about our work with Americorps and a local apprenticeship program: two programs that allow CIHA to further invest in the future by partnering with other organizations to provide valuable professional and life experience for young people from Alaska as well as other states around the country. We're grateful for the dedication and hard work of these young men and women who provide valuable service to us. I am also personally thankful for the added satisfaction I get from knowing their experience with CIHA will help lay a solid foundation upon which these young people can build and thrive.

Best regards,
Carol
