Americorps Enhances CIHA Summer

Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results. -- Andrew Carnegie

Each year for the past 4 years Boys and Girls Club of Alaska has been successful in bringing a group of Americorps volunteers to Anchorage for much of the summer. The volunteers spend most of their summer working with our local youth and supporting Boys and Girls Club programs, but for a few weeks CIHA puts them to work at our rental properties in exchange for housing during their entire Alaska stay.

CIHA is thankful for this great partnership which provides needed service for our community and our organization, while allowing CIHA to do what it does best: provide housing opportunities. Additionally the volunteers get a wide range of experiences and, we hope, learn a few new skills.

This past summer the Americorps team painted exterior trim, doors, fencing, dumpster enclosures, parking stripes and designated play areas including hopscotch lines at Brighton Park Apartments. They also did grounds maintenance at Brighton Park, Strawberry Village Cottages and Centennial Village.

They worked hard and provided some relief to our summer maintenance budget. We appreciate their time as well as that of the staff at Boys and Girls Club who work so hard to coordinate this effort each year.

This is truly a great example of teamwork ...
